TWO COMMON TYPES OF GENERATORS
SYNCHRONOUS VS INDUCTION

There are two commonly used types of generators. They are synchronous and induction. A synchronous generator, mainly used as an emergency powersource, and often times used as the sole source of all power requirements in a inany giving area. When the generator is used as the sole power source, it must belarge enough, that is, the KVA / KW rating must exceed the demand by no lessthan 20% to handle the high peak loads of the operation. In addition, switchgearand paralleling equipment is often installed for simultaneously operating thegenerator with the utility.

Induction generators are used as peak saving options. Induction generators provide power to withstand additional loads or demands such as air-conditioningin the hot months of the year and for starting large machinery, etc.  induction generators produce power only from a parallel power source, such as anothergenerator or the local utility provider. Induction generators cannot operateindependently of another power source, therefore it’s beneficial to work with the local utility provider to gauge the operations peak KW demands to help in sizingthe induction generator. There are several factors that need to be consideredbefore purchasing a generator such as, the transfer switch size, additional fueltank requirements, enclosure options and fuel consumption.

If you are in need of a synchronous or induction generator, give Vital Power and Equipment call and we will assist you in sizing your generator(s) and provide you with the best possible solution to your back up, standby, or prime power needs.
